Koi Care: Good Information About Your Pets
The Koi is among the most popular fresh-water pond fish that has emerged in the fish industry today. These fish can be found living in waters in millions of outdoor ponds throughout the world. The are well-loved by their owners due to the many patterns and colors they have, as well as the longevity of their lifespan (up to around 30 years old). These qualities make them the perfect pets that can be taken care of in outdoor ponds.
These fish are domesticated varieties of the carp (the word "carp" is "Koi" in Japanese). They come in a variety of patterns and colors, such as yellow, orange, red, black, blue, silver and green. External elements like the environment in which they live and their diet they have affect their color, and with this you can see the amount of patience and skill it took for the first breeders in Japan to develop such a magnificent fish!
They are very social with the other fish (just as long as they're not small enough to be eaten by opportunistic predators). In smaller areas they tend to school together, but divide into smaller groups in larger areas.
They can grow into large sizes, so you'll need at least 500 gallons of water to contain them. If ever you get to decide to house them in smaller ponds, just observe how big they can get. If overcrowding occurs, you can always alter the size of your pond by making it bigger, or you can also choose to trade your larger fish for smaller ones.
Keep in mind that space is important for the health of your fish, so for this, you need to keep the number of fish you have in the pond with respect to the amount of water the pond holds. Because they cost much, they can be hard to replace with.
These fish thrive in cold water, making them perfect in temperatures between 61 and 75 degrees Fahrenheit. Due to the fact that these are amazing fish that live in colder temperatures, they can be kept outside in the winter safely. Make sure that the pond itself will reach no less than a depth of 3 feet. As winter comes, they will start hibernating. Their digestive system will slow down almost is if it will stop. The food stored in their stomach may turn bad and make them sick, so it's very important not to feed them in temperatures below 50 degrees Fahrenheit.
The pond itself is a soothing and relaxing area as you hear its rippling water flows, and to complete it, it should be added with the beautiful Koi. Koi owners consider themselves lucky having this magnificent pet they can take good care of, touching their lives completely!
